The GMC 2 1/2 ton truck was built in a very large number of specimens and can be considered the backbone of U.S. Army logistics during World War II. Characterized by a very robust and reliable structure, which had its strength in good “off-road” performance thanks to the six-wheel drive and the effective suspension design, it was made in numerous variants. In addition to the more widespread “cargo” versions with open or closed cabin, “long steps” and “short steps”, configurations were also developed, some of them made directly “on the field”, for more specific and punctual uses. Its role was fundamental to meet the demanding logistical needs following the early stages of the Normandy landing with the transport and handling of impressive quantities of troops and materials.
