From the American tactical transport truck General Motor CCKW-353 21x2 t 6x6 was designed and built a special amphibious version to meet the logistical needs of the U.S. Army landing wards in order to transfer cargoes directly and quickly from ships to the beach. The basic components were in fact the same as the GMC road truck with its 4,400 cm3 6-cylinder engine and the three differentials with the six-wheel drive. The DUKW was characterized by the welded hull, to make it amphibious, reinforced by horizontal ribs. Its strength was the extraordinary versatility and load capacity. It could carry 2,400 kg of payload or 25 fully equipped men. The DUKWs were widely used on all theaters of war by the United States Army, Marines and armed forces of numerous Allied countries. They made their effective contribution to the landings of Salerno, Anzio, Normandy during D-Day, both in Utah and Omaha, and on the Pacific beaches.
